Wynton Kelly Wynton Kelly
Wynton KellyはJamaicaからの移民の両親のもと、1931年12月2日にBrooklynに生まれた。ピアニストのRandy Weston、ベーシストのMarcus Millerはいずれもいとこである。プロとしての活動は10代で始め、最初は1943年ごろからR&Bのグループで演奏活動を行っていた。15歳時にRay Adamsのバンドに参加した。初期にはLee Abrams、Cecil Payne、Dinah Washingon、Dizzy Gillespieらとの共演を果たし、1959年から1963年にかけてMiles Davisのバンドに参加した。Miles Davisの"Kind of Blue"、John Coltraneの"Giant Steps"の録音に参加していることは有名である。
1951年よりBlue Noteに録音を残し、1951年から1952年にかけてはDinah Washington、Dizzy Gillespie、Lester Youngらのバンドで活動した。1952年にLester Youngのバンドに参加している際の録音が残っている("The President, Vol.3-4")。
1952年から1954年の徴兵の後、1955年から1957年にはDinah Washington、1956年から1957年にはCharles Mingus、1957年にDizzy Gillespieのビッグバンドに参加したが、その名が最も知られるようになったのはMiles Davisのバンドで活動していた時だった。Miles Davisのバンドを抜けた後はPaul Chambers、Jimmy Cobbとのピアノトリオで活動し、Blue Note、Riverside、Vee-Jay、Verve、Milestoneなどのレーベルに多数の録音を残した。
1963年には娘Tracyが生まれ、Little Tracyという楽曲を残している。Tracy Matisakは2010年現在Philadelphiaのテレビ番組でパーソナリティを務めている。
1971年4月12日にCanadaのTrontoでてんかん発作のため亡くなった。
