Mal Waldron Mal Waldron
Malcolm Earl Waldronは1925年8月16日にNew Yorkに生まれた。
New YorkのQueen's Collegeで音楽の文学士号を取得後、1950年代はIke Quebec、"Big Nick" Nicholas、またR&Bのバンドで活動した。
1954年から1956年にはCharles Mingusのグループで演奏し、Billy Holidayのアカンパニストは1957年からBilly Holidayが亡くなる1959年まで務めた。
また、Prestige Recordsの監修を務めており、楽曲やアレンジを提供している。Billy Holiday没後は主に自らのグループを率いて活動した。1961年〜1962年にはEric Dolphy、Booker Littleのバンドに参加している。
映画音楽の作曲も行った（The Cool World、Three Rooms in Manhattan and Sweet Love、Bitterなど）。
1963年に神経症を患い、自分の録音を聴いてスキルを学びなおさなければならなくなった。この際に演奏がビバップとアヴァンギャルドの入り混じったより陰気臭く、狂気じみたものになったと言われる。
ヨーロッパで映画音楽の仕事を終えて後、1965年にヨーロッパに永住を決めた。最初はドイツのMunichに住み、晩年はベルギーのBrusselsに移った。以後はヨーロッパおよび日本で精力的に録音活動を行い、アメリカで定期的に講演を行った。
1973年にはドイツのバンドEmbryoと数作のアルバムにわたって共演した。
1980年代から1990年代にはSteve Lacyとのセッションを重ねた。
生前数年には大した健康状態悪化は見られなかったものの、2002年にがんと診断された。演奏活動は継続し、2002年12月2日にベルギーのBrusselsで亡くなった。
