Sonny Clarkは1931年7月21日、Pennsylvania州、炭鉱の町Herminieに生まれた。ピアノは4歳の時に始めた。12歳のときにPittsburghに引っ越している。20歳のときにピアニストの兄とともにCaliforniaはLos Angelsのいとこを訪ねた際、Californiaに留まることに決め、サックスプレイヤーのWardell Grayと活動を開始した。数ヵ月後にはOscar PettifordとともにSan Franciscoへ行き、1953年にはBuddy DeFrancoと仕事をすることになる。1956年にはアメリカ、ヨーロッパをツアーし（"Sonny Clark Memorial Album”として録音が残っている）、またHoward Rumsey率いるLighthouse All-starsに参加した。
東海岸に戻りたいという希望があり、1957年2月にDinah WashingtonのツアーについてNew Yorkに移った。New Yorkでは、多くのミュージシャンにサイドメンを頼まれる存在であった。Blue Noteに数多く録音しており、Kenny Burrell、Donald Byrd、Paul Chambers、John Coltrane、Dexter Gordon、Art Farmer、Curtis Fuller、Grant Green、Philly Joe Jones、Clifford Jordan、Jackie McLean、Hank Mobley、Art Taylor、Wilbur Wareなどといったミュージシャンのアルバムに参加している。Charles MingusやSonny Rollins、Billie Holiday、Stanley Turrentine、Lee Morganのアルバムにも参加している。
バンドリーダーとしては、1957年に”Sonny Clark Trio”、1958年に”Cool Struttin’”を録音している。
1963年1月13日、薬物とアルコールの濫用による心臓発作のため亡くなった。

Bill Evansとは親しく、Bill Evansの”NYC’s No Lark”という楽曲は、楽曲名がSonny Clarkのアナグラムになっている。Sonny Clarkの死後に作曲された。Hampton Hawesと親しかったことも有名である。（いずれも薬仲間か？）
John ZornらによりSonny Clark Memorial Quartetというバンドが結成されている。メンバーはJohn Zorn、Wayne Horvitz、Ray Drummond、Bobby Previte。
