McCoy Tyner McCoy Tyner
Alfred McCoy Tynerは1938年12月11日にPennsylvania州Philadelphiaに3人兄弟の長男として生まれた。ピアノは母にすすめられて 13歳の時に始め、その後は音楽活動に没頭することとなった。John ColtraneとはPhiladelphia時代、ハイスクール卒業後に出会い、その後親しく付き合うようになった。
1960年に Benny Golson、Art FarmerらによるJazztetに参加したことで知られることとなった。Jazztetを去ったのちはSteve Kuhnに代わってJohn Coltraneのバンドに短期参加しそのまま在籍。John Coltrane、Jimmy Garrison、Elvin JonesらからなるJohn Coltrane Quartetは1961年から1965年まで続いた。John Coltraneのバンドはより一層激しく無調な音楽となり、1965年を以ってMcCoy TynerはJohn Coltraneのバンドを脱退した。
1966年からは自らのトリオを結成した。1967年から1970年にかけてはBlue Note Recordsにおいて"the Real McCoy"、"Tender Moments"、"Time for Tyner"、"Expansions"、"Extensions"といったリーダーアルバムをリリースした。直後にMilestonesレーベルに移籍 し、"Sahara"、"Enlightenment"、"Fly with the Wind"といったアルバムを残した。
1980年代にはAvery Sharpe、Louis Hayes（ドラマーはのちにAaron Scottが務めるようになる）らとトリオで活動し、"Revelations"、ソロで"Soliloquy"を録音した。
以後、おもに自らのトリオおよびカルテットで活動している。
