Julian Clifford Mance, Jr.は1928年10月10日にIllinois州Evanstonに生まれた。5歳の時にピアノを始めたが、8歳まではちゃんとしたレッスンを受けたことがなかった。10代前半よりプロとしての活動を始めた。音楽で有名なChicagoのRoosevelt Collegeにも通っていた。
1947年にRoosevelt Collegeを離れ、Gene Ammonsのバンドに参加、同時にGene Ammonsとのレコーディングの機会を得た。1949年にはLester Youngのバンドに参加し、2年間ピアニストを務めた。1951年に再度Gene Ammonsのバンドに参加した後、徴兵によりアメリカ陸軍に加わった。Kentucky州のFort Knoxで陸軍の楽隊に所属しここでCannonball Adderleyと出会った。
1953年に除隊後はChicagoのBee Hive Jazz Clubのハウス・リズムセクションとしての職を得、ここではCharlie Parker、Coleman Hawkins、Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis、Sonny Stittその他大勢のミュージシャンと共演した。
1954年にDinah Washingtonのツアーに参加するとともに、多数のレコーディングに参加した。
1956年にCannonball Adderleyと再会し、Cannonball Adderleyとバンドを結成することとなった。このバンドはMercury Recordsに複数のレコーディングを残した（"The Sharp Shooters”、”Sophisticated Swing”）。
1958年にDizzy Gillespieのバンドに参加しており、Junior Mance自身、あこがれのDizzyGillespieとの演奏を通して、この時期に非常に多くの経験を積むとともにビジネスとしても非常に多くのものを得たと話したという。
1959年に初のリーダーレコーディングを行った（”Junior”）。また、1961年にも自らのトリオを結成し、レコーディングを行った（”The Soulful Piano of Junior Mance”など）。自らのトリオの他にも、Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis/Johnny Griffin Quintetに籍を置き、レコーディングにも参加している。また、1963-1964年にはトリオでJoe Williamsのバックも務めた。
1988年、Junior ManceはThe New School for Jazz and Contemporary Musicにおいて孔子を務め、ブルース、バラードといった授業を受け持った。
1990年代になると”100 Gold Fingers”というイベントに非常に優れたピアニスト集団の一員として日本をツアーするようになった。
1997年11月21日、International Jazz Hall of Fameに招待され、古今東西の非常に優れたミュージシャンの一人として数えられたことをJunior Mance自身、非常に名誉と感じていたそうである。
2007年、Junior Mance TrioはJackie WilliamsとHide Tanaka、Jose Jamesという顔ぶれでCDをリリースした。
