Barry Harris

Barry Doyle Harrisは1929年12月15日にMichigan州Detroitに生まれた。

Art Tatum、Coleman Hawkins、Charlie Parker、Thelonious Monkといった音楽家による影響を強く受けたピアニストだが、とりわけBud Powellからの影響が強く、非常によく似た演奏をする点でもよく取り上げられる。

Detroitを去り New Yorkへ移ったのは1960年のことだった。Cannonball Adderley、Illinois Jacquet、Coleman Hawkins、Dexter Gordon、Max Roachといったミュージシャンのバンドに在籍したが、同時期にリーダー録音も10数作残している。

1970 年代になると、Thelonious Monkとその家族とともにジャズ・パトロンとして知られるBaroness Pannonica de KoenigswarterのNew Jersey州Weehawkenにある邸宅に住み、Thelonious Monkの晩年を語る友人として最も良い環境で過ごしたとされる。1989年に製作されたThelonious Monkのドキュメンタリー映画「Straight No Chaser」（Clint Eastwood作）において出演しており、Tommy Flanaganとデュエットで演奏している。
1980年代になると、Jazz Cultural Theaterという集まりを主催し、そこでグループ音楽やピアノ指導を行った（この様子は”For the Moment”などの録音で聴くことができる）。脳卒中により、養生のためJazz Cultural Theaterは中断された。

1991年からはTorontoで活動するピアニストであり教師であるHoward Reesとともに教則ビデオ制作を手掛けた。

2000年には” Barry Harris - Spirit of Bebop”というフィルムに収められた。

以後、世界中で演奏活動を行うとともにジャズ・ワークショップを開催し、New Yorkにおいては毎週ボーカル、ピアノ、その他の楽器を対象にワークショップを行っている。

日本人としては、北海道在住のジャズピアニスト福井良氏と親交があり、来日の際には北海道を訪ねたという。福井氏によると、Barry Harrisはウニが大好物だそうであった(2013.6.7 福井良さんのお話より)。福井良氏は2016年3月15日に悪性リンパ腫のため亡くなり、Barry Harrisは電話での連絡を受けとても悲しんだとのことである(2016.3.16 玉川健一郎氏より)。

Thelonious Monkについての語り部としても知られるが、面白い話が尽きない。「ある時Monkがピアノの前に座り長いこと練習していたが、同じ曲の同じところで必ず間違える。やり直してもやっぱり同じところで間違える。何度も何度も間違えるのだが、ライブの当日、Monkはその間違えた通りの演奏をステージ上で自信たっぷりに演奏した。間違えているとこちらは思っていたが、実はMonk本人はそういう音を求めて試行錯誤していたというわけだ」
