Jones)としてPennsylvania州Pittsburghに生まれた。3歳の時、叔父であるLawrenceが自分の弾いている音を真似させよ
う
としたところからピアノを始め、ちゃんとピアノのトレーニングを行うようになったのは7歳のとき、Mary
Cardwell Dawsonからであった。Pittsburg出身ということからEarl Hines、Billy Strayhorn、Mary
Lou Williams、Erroll Garnerといったミュージシャンの影響を強く受けたという。また、James
Millerよりピアノの手ほどきを受け、14歳の時からプロとして活動を始めた。当時、Art
Tatumからも「こいつはビッグになる」と見られていたようである。当時のことについて、New York
Times誌からインタビューを受けた際には、「当時は、だれか自分を見つけてくれやしないかと、ドアを開けっぱなしで練習していたものだ。自分は一日
20時間も練習するというような意味での練習の虫ではなかったけれど、いつも音楽のことを考えていた。今でも音楽ずっと考えているけどね。」と語ってい
る。その後、George Westinghouse High
Schoolに通い、1948年に卒業した後はGeorge Hudsonのオーケストラのツアーに参加した。The Four Stringsといったツアーグループにも参加していた。
1950年にChicagoに移り、Von FreemanとClaude McLinらと活動した。1951年にOkeh
labelにthe Three Stringsとして最初の録音を行った（Guitar: Ray Crawford、Bass: Eddie Calhoun）。その後もベーシストをRichard DavisやIsrael Crosbyと変えつつ活動を行った。同時期ごろからプロデューサーのHammondに才能を見込まれるようになった。続いて1953-1955年にはParrott、1955年にはEpicに録音を行った。
1952年にイスラム教に改宗し、名もAhmad
Jamalと改めた。以後も、一部のローカルなミュージシャン協会ではFritz
Jonesと呼ばれていた。最初のOKeh recordにはFritz
Jonesとクレジットされている（名前を変えた後にリリースされた版にはこれは見られない）。
1953
年にMiles
Davisから演奏を大きく評価され、バンドに誘われたが「シカゴから離れるつもりはない」と拒否した（代役がRed
Garlandになる）。引き続き録音活動を行っていたが、1957年にギターを加えたトリオからドラムを加えたトリオ(Bass: Israel
Crosby, Drums: Vernell
Fournier)になった際にサウンドが大きく変わってきたという。このトリオはドラムとしてVernel
Founierが参加しており、Chicago's Pershing Hotelにおいてハウス・トリオとして活動した。このトリオで録音したライブ録音である"But
Not For Me"は108週間にわたってベストセールス10位に残り続けたという。この成功で、Ahmad
JamalはAlhambraにレストランとクラブ"The Alhabama in Chicago"を開店した。
1962年にThe Three Stringsは解散し、JamalはNew Yorkへ移った。
1964
年にはツアーとレコーディングを再開し、1965年にJamil Nasserとのアルバム"Extensions"を発表、Jamil
Nasserとの活動は1964年から1972年まで続いた。また、Vernell Fournier、frank
Gantらとの活動を行い、トリオや、ときにギターを加えることもあった。1970年からは電子ピアノも手掛けるようになった。
近年はベーシストJames
CammackとドラマーIdris Muhammadのトリオで活動しており、2008年にはToronto
Jazz Festivalに参加した。
1994年にはNational Endowment
for the Arts American Jazz Masters賞を受けたほか、Yale
UniversityにおいてDuke Ellington Fellowに任命された。
