Ramsey Emmanuel Lewis, Jr.は1935年5月27日にIllinois州Chicagoに父Ramsey Lewis, Sr.とPauline Lewisの間に生まれた。 4歳の時にピアノのレッスンを始めた。15歳の時に初めてのバンドであるThe Cleffsに参加、後にそのメンバーであるIsaa "Redd" Holt Eldee Youngとともにトリオを結成した。トリオを結成後、1956年に初のアルバム"Ramsey Lewis and The Gentlemen of Swing"を発表した。また、1965年にはヒットとなる"The In Crowd"を録音した（シングルチャート5位、アルバムチャート2位を取得した）。トリオはメンバーを変えつつ"The In Crowd"、"Hang On Sloopy"、"Wade in the Water"といった作品を発表、いずれもミリオンヒットとなり、1966年にはアメリカでもっとも成功したピアニストの一人に数えられるほどになった。
Ramsey LewisはまたChicagoのラジオ局WNUAで2009年までラジオパーソナリティを務めた。2006年には13回のテレビ番組が民放で放映され、その中でLarry Gray、Lonnie Smith、Joey Defrancesco、Dave Brubeck、Chick Corea、Kurt Elling、Benny Golson、Pat Metheny、Tony Bennettといったミュージシャンの演奏を披露した。
また、Chicagoの音楽プログラムであるthe Board of Trustees for the Merit School of Musicで従事するとともに、The Chicago High School for the Artsでも講師を務めた。
以後もChicagoに住み、7人の子供と14人の孫、1人の曾孫に囲まれて暮らしている。
