Frank Hewitt

1935年10月23日にQueensで生まれた。幼少期よりHarlemで育ち、生涯のほとんどをHarlemで過ごした。母が教会のピアニストであり、幼少期のみであったが母の勧めのためピアノを学んだ。最初はクラシックとゴスペルを学び、そののちCharlie Parkerのレコード "Dewey Square"を聴いたことがきっかけでジャズピアノに転向した。Thelonious Monk、Bud Powell、Elmo Hopeといったピアニストを基礎に据えたバップピアノを演奏し、1950年から1960年代にかけてはHoward McGhee、Cecil Payne、John Coltrane、Dinah Washington、Billy Holidayらと演奏活動を行った。また、1961年にはFreddie Reddが楽曲を提供し、Jackie McLeanらが出演していたことで知られる"The Connection"にも参加した。New Yorkでの音楽活動を精力的に続ける一方で、録音には恵まれず、90年代に至るまで1度のリーダー録音も残すことはできなかった。2001年にSmallsのオーナーであったLuke Kavenの勧めで"We Love You"を録音した。以後も数回のレコーディングを行ったが、癌を患い、リリースされるのを待たず2002年9月5日に亡くなった。

Barry Harrisにゆかりのある人物としてもよく知られている。1990年代にはManhattanのジャズクラブSmallsの中心的演奏家であった。週に数回の演奏をおこなう以外はメッセンジャー、冷凍品配達の仕事をして生計を立てていたという。

窃盗のため投獄されていたことがある。

生前に発表された作品は"Jazz Underground: Live at Smalls"というコンピレーションアルバムに収録されている1曲のみであるが、死後"We Love You"、"Not Afraid to Live"、"Fresh from the Cooler"、"Out of the Clear Black Sky"、"Four Hundred Suturdays"といった作品が続々と発表され、バップピアニストの中では世界的に知られる所となった。
